A stampede at a school funfair in the southwestern Nigerian city of Ibadan has eliminated 35 children and seriously injured 6 others, authorities said on Thursday.

The hurt kids were receiving medical attention following the event, which took location on Wednesday in Nigeria's third-largest city, Oyo State Police Command said.

"8 persons have given that been jailed for their numerous participations", authorities spokesperson Adewale Osifeso stated in a declaration.

Among those detained was the primary sponsor of the event at the Basorun Islamic High School, which was organised by the Wings Foundation and Agidigbo FM radio.

The Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department has opened a probe, Osifeso added.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu on Thursday in a statement "revealed extensive sadness over the awful occurrence".

He offered his "genuine condolences" to residents, state authorities and the "mourning households who have lost their precious children".

He urged the "Oyo State government to take every required measure to prevent such a tragedy from repeating", the statement by the presidency added.

"Among the important actions are a detailed evaluation of all public events' safety steps, rigorous enforcement of safety regulations, and regular security audits of event locations," Tinubu added.
