WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boost in specific stats. Each upgrade item increases the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless the item has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher item level upgrade level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied on any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader at least once every few weeks, to keep your equipment up to date.

Valorstones

The upgrade cost depends on the slot of the item upgrader mod and the current item upgrading level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Certain upgrades provide discounts on Flightstones. Once an item is upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currencies.

Item upgraders can be found in many places including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system, which was introduced in 10.1 and item Level upgrade are available in 4 ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests can only be spent on equipment of a particular rank, and every rank has different requirements for its upgrade path. The simplest and easiest upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests through working through content at the appropriate level. The use of these currencies isn't too difficult however, the system does introduce some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest possible ilvl for all their characters instead of relying only on seasonal loot.

Another significant change is that crests have one purpose and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance it's Best item upgrader to make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the top equipment you have, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you plan on making. This is particularly relevant for trinkets and rings that occupy multiple slots on the character which will only be able to take advantage of the account-wide discount if all of the slots are filled with top-quality equipment.
